The Placentia Hope and Pride are two Voith propelled Tractor Tugs
designed to provide escort and docking services to the tankers calling
at the Newfoundland Transshipment terminal at the head of Placentia Bay.
The tugs are 35.83m LOA by 13m Breadth and are equipped with 2- 2030kW Bergen Diesels.
On trials the vessels exceeded all the design parameters, achieving 14 knots
ahead, 13 knots astern and 57 Tonnes of Bollard pull. A high degree of noise
control measures resulted in a noticeably quiet ship throughout the
accommodation and wheelhouse.
During training the crews experienced 55 knots of wind and used the Hibernia
shuttle tanker "Kometec" to practice indirect towing methods. Captain Naismith
of Voith, who has been aboard nearly every Voith tug in the world, was very
pleased with the performance.
These tugs represent a versatile and effective solution to the escort and ship assist requirements.
